02 Aug Book’s inspiration from black style icons
Fashion icons Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Kanye West and Beyonce, and Michelle Obama all feature in a new photographic book How to Slay: Inspiration from the Queens and Kings of Black Style.
Ex-Essence editor Constance C.R. White explores the foundation of black style through this collection of dramatic fashion photography moments from the past 35 years that have influenced cultural trends and the fashion industry.
The book also looks at the prevailing influence of black style and fashion on all areas of life: “Exploding down runways, in stores, online and on Main Street – everywhere you look – style shaped by the African Diaspora is ubiquitous in fashion today for people of all colors, races and creeds,” says White.
“With this book, I seek to document and represent how Black style is put together and worn, how it is presented, and how it has influenced fashion in ways both large and incremental.”
“My intention was not to make a comprehensive or definitive volume; it is meant to be a fun, informative, and entertaining journey through Black style.”
